Windows Vista’s First Service Pack Near Release

February 7th, 2008 by Rob

Microsoft has been taking a lot of heat since it released Windows Vista. The general reaction in the market has been a “let’s wait and see” approach, as the market has gotten wiser over the years as Microsoft has had a habit of releasing new operating systems that aren’t really stable until the first “service pack” is available.

The past has shown that Microsoft usually ends up releasing a service pack within a year or so, and Windows Vista is turning out to follow the same pattern. Windows Vista was available through the retail channels on January 30, 2007. Microsoft has released the SP1 (Service Pack 1) for Vista to manufacturers, and it is scheduled for release to the public in March 2008.

The RTM (Release To Manufacturing) version of SP1 is already getting some negative feedback. It seems that there may still be some driver issues, and several issues that were supposed to be addressed may not be. Here are some links to recent blogs:

Austin Lane is not recommending Windows Vista to our network support customers at this point in time. Once SP1 is released and we are able to do some testing and get feedback from other users, we will make an informed business decision about the viability of Windows Vista for our customers’ business networks.
