US Loses Top Spot to EU
February 13th, 2008 by JeffThis is one top spot that no one should be upset about losing. The top spot I am referring to is the top source of SPAM. According to Symantec, the biggest producer of spam email is the European Union. The United States has held the title of the number 1 spamming country in the world for years now. The main cause of this is the sheer numbers of PCs that are in homes and businesses in the United States. As broadband internet access has spread across Europe, the number of SPAM emails coming from Europe has risen as well.
Symantec has published their monthly report on SPAM that their anti-spam software detects. According to Symantec, of the email they able to count blocked, they are blocking about 85% of all email as SPAM. Austin Lane’s SPAM filtering service routinely blocks between 91% and 94% of all email due to it being classified as SPAM. For all of these percentages, there is email that is blocked that is unable to be counted, so the real numbers are higher.
