Today, email is the lifeline of many businesses worldwide. It allows for quick, accurate, and precise communication between people around the world. But one thing that everyone hates is SPAM. It comes in many shapes and sizes and causes annoyances to everyone around the world. We want it to all go away, but how? Here at Austin Lane, we recently enlisted the skills of a Barracuda Spam Firewall to aid in the prevention and removal of spam. Barracuda Networks is the worldwide leader in email and web security filtering over 2 billion emails daily through their devices. Austin Lane contributes an average of 40,000 emails to that daily average. That appears to be a large number of emails but be aware that on average, 90% of all emails received are SPAM, leaving only 10% of emails as legitimate emails. With the help of the Barracuda Spam Firewall, Austin Lane is able to offer this leading email filtering technology to our clients.

Austin Lane’s new email filtering solution offers many new features:

Intelligent Spam Scoring

The Barracuda Spam Firewalls offers an intelligent spam scoring system that can be set and modified on a per user basis. This allows each user to optionally set when a message is blocked, quarantined, or delivered. This fine tuning makes sure that you get the messages your need.

Daily Quarantine Notifications

At 6am, every morning, the Barracuda will send out an email notifying you of the email that it as quarantined. This email did not pass the scoring system to be allowed but on the other hand it did not fail enough to be blocked. This notification gives you the sender and subject with the options to delete, deliver, or whitelist (always allow) the email. This list can also be seen by logging into the Spam Firewall directly.

Barracuda Outlook Plug-in

In addition to the intelligent spam scoring system of the Barracuda, there is also an Outlook plug-in that we offer for download. This plug-in adds a section to your command bar with 2 envelopes. The green envelope will tell the Barracuda to always allow email from the sender; where as the red envelope will tell the Barracuda to always block email from the sender.

Rate Control / Virus Control

The Barracuda is also able to offer protection from email bombs or attacks. This happens when a particular source sends a large amount of email to your location in hopes of causing problems, downtime, or worse a crash. The Barracuda is able to intercept and prevent this from reaching your location. Virus protection is also offered with up to the minute updating of definitions. When a new virus outbreak occurs, the Barracuda immediately receives an update to prevent it from coming in and spreading through your email.
