Lifetime membership to Facebook
February 13th, 2008 by JeffIs it true that you get a lifetime membership to Facebook when you sign up for an account?
According to this New York Times article, this is the case.
By default, when deactivating your user account with Facebook everything works as you would expect. However, instead of deleting all of your personal information and the information that was stored in your account, Facebook saves this information. According to Facebook, this is so that you can easily come back and start using their services again, which is similar to what Google Desktop does when you uninstall it and it asks if you want to keep it indexed.
The problem arises when you add this in with Facebook’s history with Beacon and the privacy concerns it brought to the forefront. There is one way to make sure your information is removed from Facebook, and that is to delete all of your information, line by line from your account before deactivating it. As of now, this is the only way to remove all of your information, but that may change with the bad press that Facebook is receiving.
