Open Internet Explorer Faster

October 11th, 2007 by Jeff

How long does it take Internet Explorer to open on your computer? One of the things that I see often when I go to a customer’s office is that it takes 4-5 seconds at a minimum to open their web browser. Everyone is looking for ways to make their computers run faster without investing more money into hardware. Keep reading for ways to open Internet Explorer faster.

The quickest and easiest thing to do to decrease the amount of time it takes to open Internet Explorer is to remove any toolbars that you may have. These would include the Google toolbar, the Yahoo! toolbar and the Windows Live toolbar. Each of these takes some additional processing resources to load, and by removing them entirely, you can reduce the load on the system when opening Internet Explorer, thus making it load faster.

The one thing that you can do that will dramatically decrease the time it takes to open Internet Explorer is to set it to not open a home page when you open the browser. In order to do this, you would need to change the shortcut that you use to open Internet Explorer. You would need to change the target from: “C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe” to ‘”C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe” -nohome’. The exact path on your computer may vary, but just ensure you add “-nohome” after any quotation marks in the target field. The next time you open Internet Explorer with this shortcut, it may look like it is trying to connect to the internet, but it has actually fully loaded, and is ready to begin browsing.

If you need to get to your homepage after this change, just click on the house in the menu area, and it will navigate to your homepage.
