Microsoft Excel has Math Problems

October 1st, 2007 by Jeff

Does anyone remember when Intel had to recall their new Pentium processors in 1994 because they did not add correctly? It seems that Microsoft may have a similar issue on their hands. According to a recent Associated Press article, whenever you have an equation that multiplies numbers, and their result is either 65,535 or 65,536, Excel will add either 34,465 or 34,464, for a result of 100,000.

The only remedy for the moment is to be mindful of any calculations that have a result of 100,000 when it seems like they should be much smaller. One interesting thing to note is that, if the you multiply the field that shows up with an incorrect value of 100000 by 2, you get the correct answer of 131,070 or 131,072 instead of 200,000.
