BlackBerry Service Outage
April 20th, 2007 by JeffDo you own a BlackBerry? If you do, or if you are looking to buy one, you may be interested to find out that the BlackBerry service provided by RIM had a service interruption on April 17, 2007 through April 18, 2007. The outage was overnight, and lasted about 12 hours. This affected BlackBerry users mainly in North America. This is just one more issue to consider when buying any mobile technology. You will want to know who’s servers and systems that you are relying upon for your mobile device’s functionality, and whether you trust them to provide an acceptable amount of uptime for your needs.
“RIM has determined that the incident was triggered by the introduction of a new, noncritical system routine that was designed to provide better optimization of the system’s cache,” RIM officials said in a statement.
“The system routine was expected to be nonimpacting with respect to the real-time operation of the BlackBerry infrastructure, but the pretesting of the system routine proved to be insufficient,” the statement said.
