Are Microsoft’s Updates Slowing You Down?
May 28th, 2007 by JeffMicrosoft Update time is coming up quickly. Are you ready to sit and wait on your computer to become non-responsive and un-usable while Automatic Updates are performed on your PC? According to Microsoft, they have a fix for this issue, but they seem to be delaying the deployment of the fix. There have also been reports that claim that Microsoft’s fix does not resolve the issue. Why do Microsoft Updates cause your computer to be unresponsive?
It turns out that Microsoft has recently disclosed that there is a bug in the way .MSI files are handled by the Microsoft Updates scanning engine. This bug will cause certain computers, not all, but some, to effectively lock-up when checking for new updates. In addition to the sluggishness of your computer, you may also get some rather unfriendly error messages. There is an article on ComputerWorld.com that claims that these fixes may not work. Another ComputerWorld.com article says that Microsoft swears the fixes work. Check these out to find out who you believe.
